An Instant of Glory
This video clip was realized by Fatma Heisele of Stuttgart who then kindly sent it on to me together with her enthusiasm and love for my Quattrostelle kite.
There is something very special in it which somehow reveals both the soul of the kite and the excitement of the flyer. At first the kite is spinning left and right for obvious reasons: it is still close to the ground, affected by turbulence and by an uneven airflow due to the various buildings and trees, and the tail is just hanging ineffectively. But then, after a few seconds, at 00:14 there comes the moment of transition: the kite steadies itself and starts gaining altitude, the tail unfurls and stretches out and starts doing its job by stabilizing the kite. From that moment onwards the kite is flying steadily and just being itself.
But it is that single instant of change that I personally find really lovely and special, the instant in which the kite and the wind really become one thing. It brought back amazing memories of my beginnings in kiting - like having just one single kite and taking it with me wherever I went. Also, that feeling on those early days that keeping a flat kite airborne was an incredibly difficult thing akin to a miracle and each time made me hold my breath.
The music is "Halfaouine" by Anouar Brahem and suits the kite perfectly. And the additional magic is that the melody starts off exactly at that point of transition - I suspect not by accident due to Fatma's skills or - who knows? - perhaps it simply happened that way. Either way, I really loved it. To be watched on full screen.
